Welcome to 6KF

Welcome to Miss Froggatt's Class

 katie

Welcome to Miss Froggatt's class page.  Currently, we have two Year 6 classes 6KF (taught by Miss Froggatt) and 6MH (taught by Mr Hood).

During the year, children will have the opportunity to build on the skills from Year 5.  Children are encouraged to be prepared for lessons by bringing their reading book and diary, drinks bottle (water only) and pencil case (optional) and any extra equipment with them every day.

Communication

If you wish to speak to a class teacher there are a number of options. As a school, Class Dojo is used as a communication tool.  All parents are given a log in and are able to view their child’s Dojo points (rewards and sanctions) and message the class teacher directly. Alternatively, parents are welcome to contact the school office with a message or to request a meeting. Please do not hesitate to do so.

The Five Bees

We encourage children to be independent learners. Before they ask a teacher for help they should:

  1. Brain – have a think about what you are learning.
  2. Book – can a book help you solve your query? For example, a dictionary.
  3. Buddy – can your friend help you?
  4. Before – look at the previous lessons work in your book.
  5. Board – use the working wall.

PE

PE session can vary according to the weather so please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school at all times. They will need the following.

  • Black/ dark coloured PE shorts
  • School PE t-shirt or a plain red or white t-shirt
  • Black pumps or trainers
  • Jogging bottoms and jumper for outdoor activities during winter

Reading

Reading - the Accelerated Reader (AR) Programme

We are delighted to have been able to introduce the Accelerated Reader programme to Ludlow Junior School to develop our children's reading.

Your child will have one AR book and an additional book - both chosen by them.

What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?

AR is a computer program that helps teachers  manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.  Children using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

Children are expected to read daily and at least three times a week to an adult.  They have been given a new log book to record reading.  Merits and certifiates are awarded for frequent reading and a wide range of reading will help improve vocabulary and the quality of writing.

Help with choosing books

It can be quite difficult to find books that engage and interest children and develop their reading skills.  This website - Love Reading for Kids - has lots of ideas and recommendations.

This is the "blurb" from the website.  Take a look - there's no obligation to buy books. You can get them from Ludlow Library or see if we have them in our school library.  If we don't, Mr Mapes is always on the look out for new books to attract our readers.

Spelling

We use the Read Write Spell   spelling programme - Children do not have spelling homework where they have to learn a set of weekly spellings and are tested.  Instead, children are encouraged to record their own spellings to learn and participate in daily spelling sessions to support their learning of particular spelling patterns and tricky words.  We have six spellings a week to concentrate on and know.  We review these each week and see if we have learnt to spell them in addition to learning the spelling pattern we are studying.

School shop

The school shop is run by Year 6s at lunchtime and sells a range of stationery for the children to purchase.

PPA

Since 2005 it has been a legal requirement that all teaching staff receive 10% Planning, Preparation and Assessment time in a week (PPA). At Ludlow Junior School, we have seen this as a positive opportunity for children to receive a quality learning experience. In Year 4, these activities include PE, RE and Technology.

Home learning

Each week, children will be given a piece of homework to complete. Your child will also have spellings to practice at home. Homework club is available every lunchtime and computers are available during these sessions. Children are still expected to read daily.
