Year 5 Topic - Summer

Ancient Greece

Science – Plants

Humans and keeping healthy

This term our topic will have a history focus. We will learn about Sparta and Athens. We will also find out about other aspects of life in ancient Greece, such as gods and goddesses, Greek myths and the theatre.

Geography - We will be studying Greece, where it is in Europe, its location, climate and population.

Art/D.T. - Making Greek masks.

RE - Creation and how it is represented in Christianity. 

PE - Swimming for 10 weeks.  Outdoor summer games: tennis/cricket/rounders/athletics

Computing - Investigating ‘blogging’.  Using the internet to research our history topic.

French - We will be learning places in town, modes of transport and the names of countries.

Science -

Plant Growth - This topic includes looking at how seeds germinate and the life cycle of plants.

Humans and Keeping Healthy - Pupils will look at how we can stay healthy with a healthy balanced diet, we will investigate different types of food. We will also investigate the beneficial effects of exercise. We will complete a short Sex and Relationships topic looking at how bodies change through puberty. This will include a visit form the school nurse. This will link to personal, Social and Health education themes.

School News

Busy Last Week Ahead!

As we enter our last week before the summer holidays, we have lots going on including our lovely head, Mrs Swann, saying goodbye to us!  Here are some of the events:

  • Monday sees children meeting their new teachers and classmates in the afternoon.
  • Tuesday is our sponsored fun run in aid of Cancer Research where children are asked to come wearing in pink or blue clothes suitable for running.  Later that morning, Sports Awards will be presented.
  • Reading treats will be taking place for different year groups throughout the week
  • Year 6 continue to rehearse for their leavers' assembly which will be presented to parents and carers at 10am on Friday, 21st July in the hall (there will be a DVD of the performance to order).  Some of our year sixes will also be representing the school at the regional atheletics final on Thursday.
  • We are having a whole school picnic on Thursday at lunchtime to celebrate our time with Mrs Swann - don't forget packed lunches!
  • There is a special lunch on Friday, chosen by the year sixes, on their last day of primary school.

There's lots more going on besides so do keep an eye on Dojo for messages from individual teachers and for information on whole school activities.
