Year 5 English

Summer Term

Writing themes

In English, the children will read and write their own myths based on ancient Greek myths. This links to our history topic. They will also turn some of these myths into a play script to act our wearing their Greek masks. We will look at the genre of discussion and take part in formal debates

Children are expected to read daily and at least three times a week to an adult. They are also expected to record the reading they have completed in their new ‘Log Book’.  Merits and certificates are awarded for frequent reading and a wide range of reading will help improve vocabulary and the quality of writing. Children will take home an ‘Accelerated Reader’ book which is matched to their reading ability. They will also have a book of their choice. Children are expected to have both books with them at school. During reading sessions in school children will take online quizzes to test their understanding of their ‘Accelerated Reader’ book. Look out for Year 5 reading challenges later in the term!

The whole school follows the Read, Write, Inc., Spelling programme.  Children may bring home spellings in their log book, which they can then practise during the week or they may have other spelling tasks to complete as homework

Busy Last Week Ahead!

As we enter our last week before the summer holidays, we have lots going on including our lovely head, Mrs Swann, saying goodbye to us!  Here are some of the events:

  • Monday sees children meeting their new teachers and classmates in the afternoon.
  • Tuesday is our sponsored fun run in aid of Cancer Research where children are asked to come wearing in pink or blue clothes suitable for running.  Later that morning, Sports Awards will be presented.
  • Reading treats will be taking place for different year groups throughout the week
  • Year 6 continue to rehearse for their leavers' assembly which will be presented to parents and carers at 10am on Friday, 21st July in the hall (there will be a DVD of the performance to order).  Some of our year sixes will also be representing the school at the regional atheletics final on Thursday.
  • We are having a whole school picnic on Thursday at lunchtime to celebrate our time with Mrs Swann - don't forget packed lunches!
  • There is a special lunch on Friday, chosen by the year sixes, on their last day of primary school.

There's lots more going on besides so do keep an eye on Dojo for messages from individual teachers and for information on whole school activities.

Children's Choice Issue 7 - Hot off the press

The latest issue of our online newspaper by children, for children is available here.  It's well worth a read and contains reports on what we have been up to in school, interesting facts and interviews with staff and pupils.  Happy reading.
